7th Grade Social Studies Students Participate in “Argue Like a Lawyer” Workshop

Before Winter Break, students in Mrs. Bott and Ms. Gibbon’s 7th Grade Social Studies classes partnered with the Delaware Law Related Education Center (DELREC) for an engaging and interactive learning experience.

DELREC’s mission is to ensure that every student develops an understanding of the law while also helping to build pathways and opportunities for students who may be interested in a future career in the justice system. As part of this partnership, students took part in DELREC’s Argue Like a Lawyer workshop.

During this one-hour workshop, law professionals visited the classroom to lead students through a civil discourse experience. Students learned how to structure a clear argument, support their claims with evidence, and respectfully engage in discussion. Working in small groups alongside an attorney, students prepared and refined their arguments while gaining insight into the skills lawyers use every day.

In addition to introducing students to careers in the legal field, the workshop also supported ELA standards by strengthening skills in analysis, synthesis, and argumentation. The experience encouraged critical thinking, collaboration, and confident communication—skills students will continue to use across all subject areas.
